One of the major threats to the adoption of sustainble building practices is that while the 'ask' of government regulation increases, existing barriers which prevent more sustainable practices from being adopted are not addressed. Worse still, governments ignore the carrots needed to change industry practice, focusing merely on the sticks.
The Property Council and the Green Building Council jointly conducted a workshop with industry leaders on 3 September 2002 in Sydney. The workshop identified barriers preventing more sustainable practices from being adopted in the property industry and some practical incentives to overcome these barriers. The workshop aimed to:
- engage senior representatives from the property industry sectors;
- identify the major barriers preventing more sustainable practices from being adopted by theproperty industry;
- identifyideas that could change current practice or remove the barriers; and
- set an agenda for an industry action plan.
