Green Star FAQs

FAQ F-00075
Can I use the NABERS waste tool to demonstrate waste to landfill reduction?

Yes, the NABERS waste tool can be used for the Waste to Landfill Reduction through the Peer Group Comparison pathway for base buildings.

The NABERS Waste tool awards reduction of waste in comparison to an industry benchmark. At present the tool caters to Office Buildings – Base Buildings. NABERS are looking to expand the tool to Office Buildings – Whole and Retail Centres later this year.

For buildings that meet these definitions, and any future definitions that NABERS produce, the NABERS Waste tool will be considered an equivalent way to target this pathway.

Points for this pathway are awarded in accordance with the table below.

The percentage reduction is lower than in the standard peer group benchmark pathway. This is to encourage and reward uptake of the NABERS tool. It also acknowledges the benefits of external verification which include transparency and the contribution to ongoing industry data collection. The GBCA reserves the right to review these benchmarks in future as use of the NABERS waste tool becomes more widespread and NABERS updates the benchmarking data.
