Green Star FAQs

FAQ F-00056
Can I use a WELL rating to achieve Green Star points?

Yes. The GBCA and International Well Building Institute (IWBI) have developed a crosswalk document to allow projects seeking WELL certification to claim points in the Green Star - Design & As Built and Green Star - Interiors rating tools. The intent of the crosswalk is to minimise the workload for project teams seeking dual ratings by determining equivalency between WELL features and Green Star credits.

Project teams must be registered for a WELL certification to be eligible to use this approach.

The most current crosswalk document can be downloaded from https://www.gbca.org.au/shop/reports/

Certified WELL features which may be used in Green Star are specifically listed on pages 13, 14 and 15 of the crosswalk. Conversely, Green Star credits, once awarded, may be used to achieve WELL ratings.

There are two ways to achieve points using WELL features:

- Using pre-approved certified WELL features as evidence project teams meet credit criteria (refer page 13 & 14 of the crosswalk document);

- Through Innovation claims, using pre-approved groupings of certified WELL features (refer page 15 of the crosswalk document). These do not require a technical question, and should be submitted using the relevant innovation claim Submission Template, outlining which initiatives and groups of WELL features the project team has used. For Exceeding Green Star Benchmarks innovation claims, the relevant Green Star credit must also be achieved by the project team before the innovation is awarded.

Please note that in order to claim points, if there is more than one item listed in the WELL features column, each item must have been achieved in order to target the Green Star point.

Please note that for Global Sustainability innovation claims, only items deemed 'Not Addressed' will be considered. These items do not need to have achieved WELL certification as they are deemed outside the scope of the Green Star rating tools. A technical question must be submitted to the GBCA for approval prior to assessment. In most cases, a number of WELL features will be required to meet this innovation claim, rather than a single feature. Please refer FAQ F-00082 for further information.
