FAQ F-00534
Can industrial buildings with a low energy intensity have a higher percentage cut-off for diesel consumption?
Can industrial buildings with a low energy intensity have a higher percentage cut-off for diesel consumption?
Yes. In the For low energy-intensity industrial buildings, emergency diesel may represent up to 3% of total building energy, where:
- the diesel is required to meet NCC 2022 and AS 2118.1 (e.g. fire pump systems),
- it is used for emergency operation and testing only, and
- 100% of the associated emissions are offset for the first five years of operation.
This allowance recognises the lower energy use per m² typical of industrial facilities and the statutory requirement for diesel fire pumps, while maintaining the intent of the credit.
Offsets:
Carbon offsets must be used (not LGCs) and must be from a scheme identified in GBCA’s Climate Positive Buildings and Our Net Zero Ambitions.
Recommended documentation
- Energy model demonstrating total building energy and diesel proportion
- Diesel system specifications
- Relevant NCC and AS 2118.1 extracts
- Evidence of compliant carbon offset purchase (first five years)
