What direction should the calculation plane be when targeting Control of Direct Illuminance?

For the Light Pollution to Night Sky - Control of Direct Illuminance criteria, projects shall demonstrate that direct illuminance from external luminaires on the project produces a maximum initial point illuminance value no greater than:

  • 0.5 lux at the highest point of the building into the night sky (1st horizontal calculation plane)
  • 0.1 lux at 4.5m beyond the highest points of the building into the night sky (2nd horizontal calculation plane)

The horizontal calculation plane shall be set at the top of the building fabric (i.e., excludes spires, lift overruns, PV panels etc).
