Green Star FAQs
Can handheld testing devices be used to show compliance with the Exposure to Toxins credit?
This FAQ was updated on 02/10/2025 to include NABERS IE pathway.
Projects may use handheld testing devices when targeting the Sampling for Air Toxins criteria from the Exposure to Toxins credit. This may be used in lieu of testing in-line with ISO 16000-6, ASTM D5197 or EPA TO-17.
Measurements are required to meet the following:
- All sample measurements must meet levels listed below:
|
Element |
Concentration |
|
TVOC |
0.27 ppm |
|
Formaldehyde |
0.02 ppm |
- Sample measurements must be collected in all areas based on the current credit requirements.
- A sample measurement is the average reading of at least 5 minutes in the same location.
- The equipment used must meet the NABERS IE requirements.
Alternatively, where the building has a NABERS Indoor Environment whole building rating which included results for TVOC and Formaldehyde and meets the above thresholds, this is also acceptable. The NABERS IE rating must be current, with a certificate expiry date that is at least 3 months in the future at the time of submission.
GBCA notes this method is only available for Green Star Performance v2 and not for Green Star Buildings.
