FAQ F-00356
Can projects target Exceptional Performance under the Upfront Carbon Emissions credit without an LCA?

Yes, projects can target Exceptional Performance under the Upfront Carbon Emissions credit by using the GBCA's Upfront Carbon Emissions calculator in lieu of following the methodology of the Life Cycle Impacts credit which requires the completion of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for modules A1 to A5 on the following conditions:

  • The project demonstrates that at least 60% of the proposed building is made up of reused building elements.
  • A narrative is provided that outlines the project's sources of module A4 and A5 emissions and how it aligns with or improves on standard practice.

This approach is allowed on the basis of that large proportions of building reuse is recognised as an effective strategy to reduce upfront carbon.
