Can theoretical calculations be used to determine the TVOC content for the Exposure to Toxins credit?
The GBCA clarifies that for the purposes of Minimum Expectation under the Exposure to Toxins credit in Green Star Buildings v1, theoretical VOC calculations may be used to determine the total VOC content of paints, sealants and adhesives on the condition that the product is at least one of the following:
The theoretical calculation methodology is to follow APAS AP-D181 7.1 whereby it must be based on the subtotal of the known VOC values of the product's raw material components. The calculations provided in the submission must include the following:
For Note: This FAQ is not relevant to carpets and engineered wood products.
- A custom product such as, but not limited to, paints with a custom tint or two part adhesives combined and applied on site
- Not used for more than 10% of the internally applied areas
The theoretical calculation methodology is to follow APAS AP-D181 7.1 whereby it must be based on the subtotal of the known VOC values of the product's raw material components. The calculations provided in the submission must include the following:
- Numerical TVOC results expressed in g/litre of product; and
- Statement that the results have been obtained based on the subtotal of the known TVOC values of the product's raw ingredients
