Green Star FAQs

FAQ F-00177
Do all LED lights need a driver with 12 bit or greater resolution if dimming controls are not being installed?

No. Projects may install LEDs with a driver that has a resolution lower than 12-bits on the following conditions;

  • Projects demonstrate that the installed driver is adequately sized for the LEDs installed to be flicker free and evidence that the lighting has no dimming controls.
  • In speculative or cold shell projects, a formal commitment should be provided from the tenants that 12-bit drivers will be retrofitted to the LED fittings if dimming controls are installed on the project.

All LED lighting with dimming control should be fitted with an LED driver that has a 12 bit or greater resolution. If the proposed development is not installing dimming controls for functional reasons, the project should demonstrate that the output current and voltage of the driver is compatible with the LED and adequately sized to regulate the current and voltage.

Documentation Requirements:

Please provide the following in your submission;

  • Evidence that the driver is adequately sized for the LEDs installed to be flicker free i.e. data sheets, specification etc.
  • Evidence that the LED lighting has no dimming controls.
  • A Tenancy Fitout Guide outlining that dimming controls will not be allowed in the tenancy fit out works unless 12-bit drivers are retrofitted to the LED fittings affected.
  • Co-signed agreement between the building owner and tenant committing to the conditions of the Tenant Fitout Guide.
  • All other documentation requirements as per the submission guidelines.
  • A copy of this response.

Note: A model lease clause will be accepted for speculative projects.
