Talk around the GreenHouse

Leading by example
By Romilly Madew, Chief Executive, Green Building Council of Australia

Gazing out of the window from the boardroom of the GreenHouse this morning while I waited for a meeting to commence, I played my favourite game: spot the Green Star building.

Five years ago, this game was a quick one.  Back then, just a handful of buildings had been awarded Green Star ratings in Sydney’s CBD.  The story was much the same elsewhere.

Today, as my eyes sweep down over the city, it is harder to spot the non-green buildings than it is those which have achieved Green Star ratings.

In nine years, Green Star has radically transformed the footprint of our cities – and this month we can proudly say that 500 projects around Australia have achieved Green Star certification.  Read more

World Green Building Week winners
A celebratory spirit has swept the country with companies across the nation organising events in honour of World Green Building Week. The GBCA would like to congratulate Norman Disney & Young which has been chosen as 2012’s World Green Building Week green event winners. Tonight, NDY is inviting the industry to share green knowledge and sustainable ideas for the inaugural NDY Open Mic Night. Our only question…who will be the first to sing?

Tell us how green buildings are making your community great for World Green Building Week
This week we’re inviting Australia to tell us how green buildings are making communities great via Facebook. Share your video on the GBCA Facebook page by Friday this week for your chance to win a free ticket to a GBCA event in your state.

As the first Australian medical facility to achieve both a 5 Star Green Star - Healthcare v1 Design rating and an As Built rating, Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) New South Wing is giving South Australian babies a 'green' start in life. “Greenstore Stamata” Supermarket, Athens Greece

Located in the Greek capital of Athens, Greenstore Stamata Supermarket has become the first commercial building in the country to achieve a ‘Very Good’ rating under the BREEAM Europe Commercial 2009: Retail Scheme. In a time of intense economic uncertainty for much of Europe, and Greece in particular, the achievement proves that sustainability is achievable in periods of downturn. “In these uncertain times (the rating) has an important symbolic significance, not only for the building’s owner but for all stakeholders in Greece,” says BREEAM Assessor Pantelis Levantis.
