Course details
The $1 billion West Village project is transforming a 2.6ha former industrial precinct in Brisbane into a vibrant new community. Developed by Sekisui House Australia, the project recently received a 6-Star Green Star Communities rating.

The precinct was the site of the Peters Ice Cream Factory dating from the 1920s which closed its doors only in 1996. Restoring the heritage buildings to their former glory is the centre piece of the project, and will anchor an urban regeneration integrating over 15,000 m2 of retail and commercial property with residential accommodation, community facilities and green space.

Many of the project's sustainability innovations have been inspired by world leading practices used by Sekisui House in Japan. Sekisui House constructed the world's first net-zero energy home in 2008 and has since gone on to build more than 31,000 net-zero energy homes in Japan.

Among the many features of the project, the arts and cultural strategy stands out, including an artist-in-residence program. Renowned Australian artist David Bromley was chosen as the first artist-in-residence to not only create sculptures and murals for the precinct but to mentor local artists and use art to activate the community.
Another significant feature of the project is the waste strategy. The project includes a designated cold-room for collection of re-usuable food to be distributed to charities. Pulping machines will be used for to process organic waste into fertiliser and biofuels, which is expected to divert at least 30% of commercial waste going to landfill.

About the presenter: Natasha Mulcahy is the Sustainability and Engagement Manager on the West Village project for Sekisui House. She previously worked for a range of organisations include Moreton Bay Regional Council, Stockland and The Hornery Institute.
