An Introduction to Passive House

We are pleased to announced our new training course – An Introduction to Passive House. This full day course has been developed for those who are new to the Passive House standard and want to know more – whether a developer, architect, engineer or contractor.

Gain an understanding on how Passive House is different from Section J compliance and explore its suitability for the Australian climate. Discover the key considerations that need to be made throughout each stage of a project. Learn from existing Australian buildings that have achieved Passive House certification.

Key areas of learning include:

  • The what, how and why of the Passive House standard
  • Deep dive into the five key principles
  • Passive House versus Section J
  • Examples of Australian projects
  • Introduction to the designPH and PHPP software
  • The Green Star and Passive House Crosswalk
  • The building certification process
  • Design team roles and responsibilities

Taking you through this interactive training is our facilitator Jessica Hogg, Certified Passivhaus Designer and Senior ESD Consultant at Arup.

This course has been developed by the Passive House Association and Green Building Council of Australia.

The organisations are committed to identifying opportunities to align the Green Star and Passive House, develop education offerings, and promote building practices that significantly raise the standard of what green buildings should be.  This course, developed jointly, will provide unique training in passive house principles for Australia.

But why Passive House?

Passive House is fundamentally about design. It is best approached as an integrated design process with the whole design team involved. As a fabric-first construction standard summarised by 5 design principles and performance criteria, it ensures a design delivers very high performance and comfort for the lifetime of the building, plugging the “Performance Gap” often experienced in building operations.

It relies on building physics and carefully integrated, minimal building services and technology. By eliminating the need to bolt expensive additional technology onto a poorly performing building, it eliminates the risk of bolt-on green-bling compromising the architecture.
