International case study
This month’s International Case Study is the LEED Canada-NC Gold Certified Mundy’s Bay Public School, in Ontario, Canada.
This is a 4,800 m2, two-storey brick school serving students from kindergarten to grade 8. In addition to classrooms, library, gymnasium and meeting/staff rooms, the school has extensive open space for sports facilities and play. The Simcoe County District School Board is committed to demonstrating sound environmental principles in its daily activities, decision making, and future planning. The decision to pursue certification under the LEED Canada rating system was one demonstration of these principles.

Member of the month

The Department of Treasury and Finance of Western Australia, a GBCA Member since 2005 and a current sponsor of the Public Buildings PILOT Tool, launched a newly integrated business system responsible for maintenance, management, design and construction of new and existing government buildings. Building Management and Works (BMW) has implemented a Sustainable Non-residential Buildings Policy, which requires all to identify, develop and promote best practice standards for its non-residential buildings. This is to be achieved by specifying appropriate standards, tools and benchmarks to facilitate the design of sustainable buildings. As part of its sustainability commitment, it is now a requirement that every new primary school is to be designed to a 4 Star Green Star standard under the Education tool.
