Christmas Greetings from the Green Building Council!

Welcome


With the end of a huge year fast approaching it's not surprising that this edition has some big announcements!

Today the Green Building Council launched the Green Star – Office Asset rating tool as a pilot for stakeholder review feedback.

667 practitioners have attended the Green Star Accredited Professional training course in just over one year – the calendar for 2005 courses is now available.

Congratulations goes to the South Australian Government for demonstrating national leadership in its announcement that it will require a minimum Green Star standard of 5-stars for all new office buildings used by the Government.

Congratulations also to Colonial First State Property for having two of its property trusts included in the 2005 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

Welcome to our new members AMP Capital Investment, Bassett, City of Ryde, Kave Consult and Oakbeech.

Thank you goes to Rebecca Blackburn who has produced 17 editions of the Green Building Voice - Bec will leave the Council this week to pursue a career in writing.

Green Star

Pilot Green Star - Office Asset Rating Tool Released!

The pilot Green Star - Office Asset Rating tool was released today for public comment. The Green Star - Office Asset tool completes the commercial office suite of tools. This tool addresses the largest segment of the commercial office market, existing buildings. The tool assists building owners assess the environmental merits of their existing or future assets. The submission period for the pilot Green Star Office Asset tool closes on 31 March 2005. Email all comments to greenstar@gbca.org.au.

SA Government to Use Green Star

The South Australian Government has announced that it will apply Ecologically Sustainable Development principles to its owned and leased office accommodation. All newly constructed office buildings to be used by the Government will be built to at least a five-star standard, using the Green Building Council's Green Star rating system.

Colonial First State Property Trusts Join 2005 Sustainability Indices

Two Colonial First State Property trusts, CFS Gandel Retail Trust and Commonwealth Property Office Fund, have been selected for membership in the 2005 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. This selection indicates that the funds are recognised in the top 10% in their respective sectors of the leading global companies in 60 industry sectors, across 34 countries. Colonial First State Property is a member of the Green Building Council.

For the second year running, Property Australia magazine has published The Green Issue, its annual edition about green building issues. Highlights include articles on Sydney Water's water conservation program for commercial property, an interview with Che Wall on the revolution in ESD since his arrival in Australia in 1993, and a directory of green professionals. Applications are now open for the 2005 Banksia Environmental Awards. Entries are invited under twelve different categories, including 'Leadership in Sustainable Buildings'. This category award will go to a group, organisation or individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the protection of the environment through the design and construction or operation of buildings.

Energy and Water Requirements for WA Office Accommodation

The WA Department of Housing and Works has released its latest Office Accommodation Policies. Policy 14 outlines energy and water requirements and includes a requirement for an Australian Building Greenhouse Rating to be disclosed when entering into a new leasing agreement and an Australian Building Greenhouse Rating to be performed on existing government tenancies over 1000 square metres.

Queensland Sustainable Housing Discussion Paper

The Queensland Government is investigating how new houses can be made more sustainable by using less energy and water. To assist in this investigation a discussion paper on sustainable housing has been released for public comment.

Energy Efficiency Reform of the Building Code of Australia

The Energy Efficiency Regulation Documents for Class 5-9 Buildings and 5 Star Houses have been released for public comment and are available on the Australian Building Code of Australia website at www.abcb.gov.au under "What's New". The closing date for receipt of comments is 15 April 2005 for Class 5-9 Buildings and 8 April 2005 for 5 Star Houses.
