From buzz to roar: Green Star - Performance

Remember the buzz in the industry when the first Green Star rating tool for offices was released?

When Green Star - Performance hits the market, the buzz will be replaced with a roar.

Green Star - Performance is the GBCA's most revolutionary rating tool project and will address the great existing building challenge.

"If you thought Green Star's achievements so far have been spectacular, wait until Green Star - Performance shoots onto the scene. It will revolutionise the industry," says the GBCA's Chief Executive, Romilly Madew.

"We encourage industry to get behind the tool development process now so that they can gain all the benefits that early adopters of the other tools have enjoyed."

Following the release of the draft scoping paper in December 2010, we've spent six months gathering research and industry feedback, which will inform the development of the tool. A comprehensive feedback report is being finalised; some of this feedback includes:

• 76% of respondents support the holistic approach proposed and believe the current Green Star categories should be communicated in operations terms
• 67% believe building occupants should be able to contribute to a building's performance rating
• 89% agreed with the proposal of Green Star ratings from 1-6 being available
• 100% of respondents supported NABERS Energy certificates as industry practice
• 86% supported NABERS Water certificates as industry practice.

"We have listened carefully to industry feedback, and as a result, NABERS Energy and NABERS Water certificates will be mandatory requirements of the Green Star - Performance rating tool. This will support our goal to ensure Green Star - Performance is easy to use and consistent with existing industry benchmarks," Ms Madew adds.

The final scoping paper and feedback report will be available shortly. In the meantime, the Green Star - Performance Technical Working Group, which is made up of experienced building operators and other industry stakeholders, has commenced the credit development process, aiming for a pilot phase in mid-2012.
