Westfield Sydney - a retail centre of excellence

An iconic shopping destination in Sydney has undergone a green makeover - and now has the Green Star certification to prove its green credentials.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has awarded the Westfield Sydney Retail Podium on Pitt and Castlereagh Streets with a 5 Star Green Star - Retail Centre Design v1 rating, representing 'Australian Excellence' in sustainable design.

According to Chief Executive of the GBCA, Romilly Madew, the 5 Star Green Star rating for the retail facility recognises Westfield's green leadership.

"We congratulate Westfield Sydney for having the vision and commitment to develop this iconic Green Star-rated retail precinct.

"Recognising that the retail sector is one of the largest consumers of energy and water, Westfield has been a supportive member of the Green Building Council of Australia for some time, and worked with us to develop the pilot rating tool for shopping centres. The Green Star rating for Westfield Sydney is the culmination of many years of hard work and collaboration between our organisations," Ms Madew says.

Through concept design to practical completion, the project team ensured that they delivered on the environmentally sustainable vision for the Westfield Sydney retail precinct."

Westfield Sydney incorporates a range of green features including a recycled water treatment system which will help the retail centre reduce water consumption by 80 per cent, and the first dedicated tri-generation system in a retail development in Australia, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent, when compared with a traditional shopping centre of a similar size. The project team also recycled more than 90 per cent of waste generated during the construction process.

"We look forward to seeing the benchmarks set by Westfield Sydney integrated into many other shopping centre projects throughout Australia," Ms Madew concludes.
