GBCA Statement: The Age/Timber Expert Reference Panel 5/9/08

Fri 5 Sep, 2008 Media Releases

It is imperative that the Timber Expert Reference Panel processes are realistic and transparent given the number of different parties involved in the sustainable timber aspect of the green building supply chain and processes. As a result of discussions with many GBCA members and parts of the industry, the GBCA has revised the TERP nomination and selection process to:

1) Be more representative of the GBCA's membership and of each part of the green building supply chain, without reinforcing any single stakeholder's interests; and

2) Clarify that the final decision on all major credit revision matters remains at the discretion of the GBCA Technical Steering Committee and Board of Directors.

With regards to the composition of the Timber Expert Reference Panel (TERP), the GBCA Board has approved that the TERP be expanded from the originally selected 6 participants. The invitation of additional newly-selected participants ensures that the panel will comprise a broader representation of the GBCA's membership base, including the different stages of a green building supply chain. The GBCA will continue to ensure that there is a balanced, relevant and pragmatic advisory group contributing to the Mat-8 'Sustainable Timber' credit revision. The outcomes of the TERP engagement will be transparently communicated to the broader range of stakeholders concerned with the revision of this credit, following the conclusion of the TERP process.

The GBCA recognises the industry's participation in, and contribution to, the credit revision process. We also acknowledge concerns from parts of the industry that this process be finalised as soon as possible. Please be aware that the date for the first meeting of the TERP is scheduled for the 26th September. The GBCA will continue to reward and encourage best practice within the sustainable timber industry and seeks to recognise best practice within Australia.

The initial timeline proposed by the GBCA which indicated on our website at www.gbca.org.au that the TERP would convene by 7th July is in the process of being updated; delays experienced in following the originally proposed timeline are due partially to the general revision of the ERP process and to the administrative difficulties encountered when attempting to coordinate a suitable meeting time for all of the TERP participants.
