Examining Passive House

How can we bridge the performance gap between the design of buildings and what is built? This is a question at the heart of the Passive House methodology. Passive House is an integrated design process delivering very high energy efficiency and occupant comfort, delivering lower operational costs for the life of the building. The aim is to minimise the need for building services and expensive technology typically associated with high-performance buildings. Rather, Passive House designers focus on the most suitable building geometry most suitable to a location and using a "fabric first" design philosophy. Key principles relate to thermal insulation, high performance windows, airtightness, heat recovery and elimination of thermal bridges. While Passive House generally focuses on residential buildings the methodology is highly relevant in commercial settings. The presentation will recap an agreement between the Green Building Council Australia and the Passive House Institute. The Passive House Crosswalk provides guidance on how Passive House can assist projects seeking a Green Star rating. The main focus of this presentation is a detailed case study of a project in Victoria with the owner/builder demonstrating the Passive House approach and providing lessons learned. John Beurle's home used a locally sourced prefab ‘SITUP’ panel system as the structural perimeter walls. Super Insulated Tilt-Up Panels are an LVL structural ply box frame system with dry straw as insulation which supports a RITEK sandwich panel corrugated Colourbond roofing system.

From ice cream to regeneration dream: a case study of West Village

The $1 billion West Village project is transforming a 2.6ha former industrial precinct in Brisbane into a vibrant new community. Developed by Sekisui House Australia, the project recently received a 6-Star Green Star Communities rating. The precinct was the site of the Peters Ice Cream Factory dating from the 1920s which closed its doors only in 1996. Restoring the heritage buildings to their former glory is the centre piece of the project, and will anchor an urban regeneration integrating over 15,000 m2 of retail and commercial property with residential accommodation, community facilities and green space. Many of the project's sustainability innovations have been inspired by world leading practices used by Sekisui House in Japan. Sekisui House constructed the world's first net-zero energy home in 2008 and has since gone on to build more than 31,000 net-zero energy homes in Japan. Among the many features of the project, the arts and cultural strategy stands out, including an artist-in-residence program. Renowned Australian artist David Bromley was chosen as the first artist-in-residence to not only create sculptures and murals for the precinct but to mentor local artists and use art to activate the community. Another significant feature of the project is the waste strategy. The project includes a designated cold-room for collection of re-usuable food to be distributed to charities. Pulping machines will be used for to process organic waste into fertiliser and biofuels, which is expected to divert at least 30% of commercial waste going to landfill. About the presenter: Natasha Mulcahy is the Sustainability and Engagement Manager on the West Village project for Sekisui House. She previously worked for a range of organisations include Moreton Bay Regional Council, Stockland and The Hornery Institute.

Embedding sustainability in aged care

To incorporate and embed sustainability, aged care organisations need to take a long-term view towards managing their environmental and social risks as well as impacts. The foundation in supporting the business case for sustainability in aged care can be categorised into two areas: operational efficiencies and enhanced brand reputation. Having a robust sustainability vision, policy, strategy and action plan can significantly reduce operating costs, eliminate waste, create energy efficiency, further engage employees, strengthen a company’s brand value and potentially open up new opportunities. In this webinar, we will explore the process of building sustainability from the ground up and 'painting on a blank piece of canvas'. The mandate to get it right from the start is critical to the longevity of the sustainability movement. Hence, this presentation also details the business case on kick-starting a program that is almost 'unchartered territory' for the business and its stakeholders.
