Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT

What is the Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT tool?

The Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT was created in 2005 specifically to rate the new Melbourne Convention Centre, which opened in June 2009.

The tool was developed with the goal of evaluating the environmental initiatives and/or the potential environmental impact of new or refurbished Class 9b building designs, where the building was intended for civic, theatrical, social, political, religious, entertainment, recreational or sporting purposes. It was recognised that these building types played a significant part in the global consumption of resources, and are often large spaces with high design conditions and high levels of variability.

The Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT rating tool and Technical Manual were funded by the Victorian Department of Major Projects and piloted on the Victorian Government's Melbourne Convention Centre (MCC). The MCC was awarded a 6 Star Green Star rating for its innovative environmental design in 2008, which demonstrates 'world leadership' and recognises that the MCC has set a new global standard for convention centre design.

After the PILOT phase of the project, it was decided that the Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT would be incorporated into the Green Star - Public Buildings rating tool, due for release in 2010.

As a result, the GBCA will not be accepting any further registrations for certification under the Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT rating tool.

The tool has been made available for information only, in response to requests from GBCA members and other industry stakeholders.

Disclaimer

While many of the credits in the Green Star - Convention Centre Design PILOT tool will inform the credits in the new Green Star - Public Buildings rating tool, there will be significant differences between the two tools and the credits therein. Project teams are advised not to assume that any particular credit will be the same in the two tools, or to attempt to determine which rating may be achieved under the Public Buildings tool on the basis of the Convention Centre Design PILOT tool.
