3.1 Carbon neutral schools
The ACT Government has committed $20 million over 10 years to assist schools become carbon neutral by 2017. All schools are required to develop a School Environmental Management Plan and will conduct energy audits and develop emission reduction and energy efficiency initiatives. Tender documents for school design and construction will include mandatory clauses relating to ecologically sustainable development (ESD) requirements.
3.2 Energy efficiency improvements in government housing
The ACT Government has allocated $20 million over 10 years to make public housing properties more energy efficient. Housing ACT has developed an implementation plan to identify and carry out the energy efficiency improvements. Energy audits are conducted on Housing ACT properties, with a focus on efficient hot water systems, upgrading ceiling and wall insulation, and solar photovoltaic systems and the provision of energy-efficient light bulbs.
