Site Tour: La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science
Achieving a 5 Star Green Star – Education Design v1 certification in January 2013, the recently completed La Trobe University Institute of Molecular Science (LIMS) is the new home of biotechnology, molecular science and nanotechnology at the University’s Bundoora campus.
Featuring a visually connected internal layout which allows building users to see into teaching and research spaces as they are used, the building consists of 34 research and support laboratories, an auditorium and numerous other teaching and practical research areas.
LIMS gained Green Star points for the approach taken to energy, with the building utilising the campus wide reticulated high water temperature hot water loop for heating and cooling. This efficient system uses waste heat generated by the Bundoora campus’ cogeneration system while, electricity demand is further reduced by the incorporation of zoned, automated lighting and HVAC systems.
Other ESD initiatives include water metering, the provision of cyclist facilities for building users, access to public transport, low off-gassing materials and more.
Join us on a guided exploration of LIMS on Monday 17 June 2013 and earn 1 CPD point towards your Green Star qualification.
