8. Capacity building
8.1 ClimateSmart Business Service
The $15 million ClimateSmart Business Service, due to commence in July 2010, will assist Queensland's small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for higher energy and other input costs when the Commonwealth's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is introduced.
The Service provides small- and medium enterprises (SMEs) with energy saving advice and products for a small fee for service. The contribution from business will depend on the final service design which will be developed.
Broadly, the ClimateSmart Business Service will provide:
- Information on what the CPRS means for their business in terms of energy and supply chain costs.
- A plan to manage their carbon exposure which outlines short, medium and long-term opportunities to lower their energy use and waste.
- An energy savings tool or product to complement the plan and help realise quick gains.
- Links into other government and industry programs that can continue to help companies become more 'lean and green'.
8.2 ClimateSmart Business Clusters
The ClimateSmart Business Cluster Program provides a forum for business groups to work together, grow and conduct business in cleaner ways. In the process, it helps Queensland small and medium enterprises lower greenhouse gas emissions, save on energy, water, materials and waste, and reduce business costs.
Businesses are often motivated to make change but individually they can lack knowledge and direction, and are hesitant to make changes. However working together, businesses are more confident to embrace change, learn and share experiences.
A Business Cluster is formed by the Leader and will consist of 20 participant businesses
who will undertake an 8 month resource-efficiency program. Cluster Leaders motivate, improve knowledge and assist participating businesses reduce business costs by improving eco-efficiency.
Funding of $10, 000 will be provided for approved Cluster Leaders to bring together Clusters of 20 businesses to progress through an 8 month efficiency improvement process.
