The World Green Building Council is the coordinating body for country green building councils.

The World Green Building Council has endorsed the Green Building Council of Australia as the national green building council for Australia and member of the World Green Building Council. It has the sole authority to appoint and direct the formation of the country green building councils throughout the world.

The World Green Building Council was launched in 1998 by David Gottfried, founder of the US Green Building Council and its first President.

The founding vision of the World Green Building Council is to provide a balanced and integrated global platform in which to collaborate and advance the work of the national green building council organisations.

The individual green building councils support the development and implementation of high performance/green building principles, standards, rating and certification systems, performance measures, technologies, products, resources and projects.

Green building councils are open, non-profit membership coalitions of the building industries diverse sectors.

The World Green Building Council was officially launched in November 2002 by its nine founding Countries. 

The World Green Building Council is a federation of global Green Building Councils.  Delegates from Australia, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, India and USA came together to ratify the formal constitution of the organisation.

Ché Wall, the founder of the Green Building Council of Australia, is the Chair of the World Green Building Council.
