Green Building Council of Australia

Mon 22 Sep, 2008 About

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) was established in 2002 to develop a sustainable property industry in Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions.

Key Objectives

To drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards:

  • sustainability by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations
  • integration of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings.

Green Star

In order to achieve these objectives, the Green Building Council of Australia launched the Green Star environmental rating system for buildings in 2003. Green Star rating tools help the property industry to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, improve occupant health and productivity and achieve real cost savings, while showcasing innovation in sustainable building practices.

Green Star rating tools are currently available or in development for a variety of sectors, including commercial offices (design, construction and interior fit outs), retail centres, schools and universities, multi-unit residential dwellings, industrial facilities and public buildings.

Education

The Green Building Council of Australia is a leading provider of sustainable building education. The GBCA runs a number of courses throughout Australia to expand industry knowledge about Green Star and green building practices.

The GBCA's Continuing Professional Development program (CPD) helps property professionals to maintain their knowledge of the Green Star environmental rating system and stay in touch with latest trends and technologies in green building

Advocacy

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has built strong relationships with federal, state and local government decision-makers to promote and support the industry's transition to greener buildings. Read more on the GBCA's advocacy efforts.

The GBCA also hosts informative Breakfast with the Stars case study seminars, Leading Green Thinkers forums, Boardroom Lunches as well as an annual member-only social event, Greens on the Green.
